Tech should improve your life, not detract from it: Samsung Galaxy Fold designer

These days, smartphones have become such an indispensable and ubiquitous part of our daily lives that nosotros inappreciably stop to marvel at the time and effort that goes into cramming that much technology into a pocket-size device.

While consumers capeesh its pocket-sized portability, they were resigned to the fact that tablets, laptops and even desktops were preferable when they needed to toggle betwixt complex computing tasks or run several apps simultaneously, or simply watch Netflix without having to squint.

That is, until Samsung launched the world'southward first foldable mobile device, the Galaxy Fold, in September.

Billed as "a device different whatever before" and "the biggest breakthrough since the mobile telephone", the Fold ushers in a new era in mobile calculating where flexible OLED screens make it possible to transform your telephone into a tablet, and vice versa. Designed to withstand more than 200,000 folding and unfolding actions, its Multi-Active Window feature tin can support three agile apps simultaneously when opened, making it the get-go-of-its-kind on the market place.

Its App Continuity feature allows for seamless transitions between the device's smaller iv.6-inch screen (when closed), to its larger vii.iii-inch screen (when opened). Information technology besides boasts 6 camera lenses — a world get-go, with a 16MP lens and a pair of 12MP lenses on the back; a 10MP photographic camera on the front; and a 10MP and 8MP dual lens on the within.

Granted, the Samsung Milky way Fold had its initial April 2022 launch postponed due to screen issues in its review sets, such as people peeling off the protective layer, thinking information technology was a screen protector. Merely all seems forgiven, seeing equally the improved iteration was sold out in several cities during its eventual September 2022 launch, and despite information technology costing South$3,000.

The man behind the device is Kang Moon Kim, principal designer from the Adjacent Generation Product Design Group for Samsung Electronics' Mobile Communications.

Focused on new product design, Kim was likewise cardinal in designing several of the tech giant'southward almost renowned flagship smartphone devices, including the Galaxy Note8, S7 edge and S7, products which went on to garner industry accolades such equally the Expert Blueprint Award, the iF Design Award and the Idea award.

He has more 90 pattern patents under his belt, with 14 awarded but for the Galaxy Fold lone.

"Our design philosophy at Samsung begins with thinking most how nosotros tin can evangelize new and innovative technologies to users," Kim told CNA Luxury via electronic mail. "We blueprint each product to ensure that the technology fits naturally in a consumer'south life to solve problems and enriches their lifestyle through new production experiences. Milky way Fold was designed for users who want an extraordinary device, for those who demand the best and want it on a bigger screen without the bulk."

His team began by focusing on why consumers need a foldable device. "Now, more than always, smartphones are used to eat media and accomplish tasks, causing a need for a larger screen without the added bulk that comes with it," he observed.

"By creating a new form factor that didn't exist before, we wanted to ensure the device offered an intuitive and familiar experience. For these reasons nosotros adult Milky way Fold's course factor, a book-like folding design that opens smoothly and satisfyingly clicks when airtight, while protecting the display from scratches."

From there, the team created hundreds of blueprint sketches that reflect specific scenarios, and adult over a thousand prototypes based on their observations of consumer lifestyles and behaviours.

They so tested the prototypes in different forms and evaluated the blueprint by using them every day, identifying points where improvements were needed.

A cardinal part of getting the design correct was, in Kim'south words, "Ensuring the feel was smooth, comfortable and satisfying during every moment of use. Throughout this procedure, we were determined to inspire consumers and provide a more meaningful mobile experience. Information technology was of import that the phone was balanced in the users' manus and featured a luxurious design."

By taking diverse hand sizes into consideration, the device's dimensions and ratio were optimised for i or two-handed use, which align with the various functionalities the Galaxy Fold provides, such as multi-tasking.

Every dimension of metallic and glass features an identical volume and shape – from the front and back of the device when folded, to the back of the device when unfolded. By evenly distributing the aforementioned weight of internal materials on the right and left sides, the device feels even and balanced. The fingerprint scanner fits exactly where the thumb falls, and then unlocking the phone is as intuitive as unfolding it. With six camera lenses in full, the Galaxy Fold has the flexibility to capture a moment, no affair how the device is held, Kim explained.

A double-anodising procedure was applied to the metal portion of the front end cover to create a consistent await from the brandish to the edge of the body, while a apartment diamond cutting process created a shiny hinge surface, Kim added, noting that "the methods add a premium and refined design to the hinge, while unifying the swivel and body's advent".

And what near his personal design philosophy? "I draw inspiration from the globe around me and how consumers collaborate with the products nearly important to them. For case, with the Galaxy Fold, we drew inspiration from several objects including books, magazines and laptops and analysed their usability… [and] nosotros landed on a blueprint that delivered easy ane-handed operation while giving consumers the immersive, big-screen experience they wanted.

"To me, the best thing about engineering is access to countless possibilities and the ability to create a connected and meaningful experience for users. And the worst thing about it, is the fast-paced environment it creates for consumers, which may seem overwhelming for some. This is why it is important to create products that are user-friendly and tin can improve their lives, rather than detract from it," he concluded.
